The Gateway Bank Visa Eco Debit Card body is 100% composed of Polyactic Acid (PLA), a bioplastic which is industrially compostable, can be safely incinerated, and will not release chemicals if discarded in a landfill. PLA cards are as strong and durable as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) cards but are far less harmful to the environment as they degrade much faster than any other petroleum-based plastics and do not produce microplastics.
All card body layers are made from 100% PLA, except for the microchip, antenna, contact plate, magnetic strip, signature panel & scheme hologram, which are made from other materials. These are necessary to be functional for payment machinery, and to be Visa Scheme compliant.
No. PLA is not toxic. In fact, PLA is often used in food handling and medical implants that biodegrade within the body over time. Even when incinerated, the card does not emit any hazardous or toxic gases, leaving only ashes. If sent to landfill, PLA does no harm and adds no chemicals to the soil.
Yes. Gateway Bank has carefully developed these cards with our partners so as to ensure they function just as well as their PVC counterparts. These cards have been certified by Visa and Mastercard ensuring they meet all necessary scheme requirements. These cards have also been certified by an external lab as well as passing ISO247819 2B profile for minimum 5 years life time under normal usage conditions.

Please review our fees and charges for ATM fees in Australia and overseas.
There are three ways to activate your Gateway Visa Eco Debit Card immediately:
If you have forgotten your PIN or would like to change your PIN for security purposes, you can do so via Online Banking.
Yes - you can use your Visa Eco Debit Card overseas at ATMs or EFTPOS terminals wherever VISA is accepted. The microchip embedded in your card ensures secure transactions and enhanced fraud protection while you are overseas.
Gateway recommends that you advise us if you intend to use your card overseas. Overseas transaction fees will apply.
If you have a joint Everyday Savings Account, Edge Account or 100% Loan Offset Account, you and your partner can each have a Visa Eco Debit Card linked to the account.
The Gateway Visa Eco Debit Card features a notch in the top right hand corner to enable visually impaired Members easily identify the card in their wallet and the correct direction to insert their card into ATMS and card readers.
You will be issued a replacement card within the first few weeks of the month your card is due to expire. Your current card will continue to work right up to the last day of the month of its expiration date. If you haven't received your replacement card towards the end of the month please call us on 1300 302 474 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm AEST).
When the card needs to be disposed of, all you need to do is cut the card up through the chip and your personal details to ensure secure disposal in your normal waste.
PLA cards will degrade up to 20 times faster than conventional PVC in land fill as they are manufactured from sustainable plant material, meaning a product that’s friendlier for the environment.
When withdrawing from an ATM please select Savings (SAV). Gateway encourages you to use the Credit (CR) option whenever available in store.
If taking cash out while making a purchase via EFTPOS the Savings (SAV) option must be selected and a PIN entered. When using Visa payWave, you will not be asked to select Credit or Savings, as the transaction is contactless.
Our Visa Eco Debit Card uses funds within your account, whereas Visa Credit Cards offered by other financial institutions provide you with a credit limit which can be used and paid for at a later date.
Visa payWave is the latest in contactless, secure transaction technology that allows you to make instant lower value purchases without entering a PIN. You just need to ‘wave and go’ by holding your Gateway Visa Eco Debit Card against any available Visa payWave reader for instant purchases under $100.
Please note that daily transaction limits will apply to payWave transactions and you may need to enter your PIN once this limit has been exhausted.
You will need to contact the merchant. You may be required to provide proof of purchase before the hold is removed.
A monthly access fee of $5 per month applies to the Visa Eco Debit Card. This fee will be charged to your linked Everyday Savings account on the 1st of every month. This access fee is in place to recover fees charged to Gateway.
The monthly fee will be waived if you also have a Loan or Edge Account with Gateway.
