7 ways to stay thrifty in winter

Daylight savings is well and truly over and as the nights become longer, so too do our electricity bills. Winter energy bills are on average 14% higher than that of summer’s[1] but don’t fret – there are so many easy ways to keep your heating costs under control this year from cooking to sealing, from layering to being heat-savvy!

Seal your doors and windows

Gaps in your doors and windows can render your heating efforts useless. As a first step, make sure to seal the cracks and gaps hiding around your home. There are a lot of easy DIY solutions that can guarantee the heat remains in your home, rather than outside.

Start by filling up gaps and cracks in your doors and windows. You can do this by simply using a multi-purpose gap filler and a corking gun – which is ideal for use in narrow gaps, between skirting boards and architraves. For deeper holes, you can use a powder filler to seal the gap.

Once you’ve taken care of the gaps, you can then use draught stoppers or attach sweepers to your doors to ensure each room in your home is draught proof, keeping you warm and cosy.

Make more home-cooked meals

If you’ve been relying on food delivery apps and dining out during the warmer seasons, make the colder climate an excuse to make more home-cooked meals. Not only will you save from take-away meals and dining out, the heat produced from cooking will add warmth to your home and keep you and your family toasty – as well as well-fed!

Draw your curtains closed at night

Keep the warm air in at night by making sure to shut your windows and doors, as well as drawing your curtains. Heat will escape through glass and, while it may seem like a small task, shutting your curtains will make all the difference to keeping the warmth in your home.

Rug up

Keeping warm in winter is all about layering your loungewear and bed linens!

When layering your sleepwear or bed linens, start with lightweight fabrics like cotton then move up to thicker options such as flannel, finishing with a heavier fabric like wool.

When it comes to accessorising with your loungewear, be sure to focus on hands, feet and head as that’s where most of your body heat will escape.

Bed linens should be layered appropriately. Flannel sheets will provide you with a warm base while wool duvets or microplush fleece blankets can offer you some extra heat while you sleep.  

To elevate your warm layers, pack on a hot water bottle or wheat pack to keep you extra toasty throughout the night.

Take shorter showers

It’s tempting to luxuriate in the warmth and steam of your shower for longer than usual in winter but be conscious about your water usage! Not only does water heating contribute to your electricity charges but saving water can help you lower your carbon footprint and is great for the planet!

Replace your bulbs

Many of us out there are stuck in the dark ages where traditional incandescent or CFL light bulbs still rule our home. If that sounds like you, make sure this winter is the season you change over to LED.

LED bulbs use about 20% of the energy that traditional bulbs use and last much longer as well! While it might be tempting to reach for the cheaper option at the store, keep in mind that it will cost you in the long run in running and replacement costs.

Be smart about heating

Finally, if you do need to call in the help of your heater, make sure to be smart about the way you use it. Knowing how to use your heater efficiently could save you significantly on heating costs.

If your heater is equipped with the timer function, don’t hesitate to make use of it. Set your heater to turn on around 15 to 20 minutes before you wake up in the morning and to turn off 20 minutes before you leave the house.

When it comes to the thermostat, be sure to keep the temperature at around 18 to 20 degrees. Every degree adds about 10% to your heating costs and these temperatures will keep you nice and cosy, particularly if you’re layering up as well.
